Security Sector

The security sector cover a wide range of functions, ranging from the employment of security personnel to those involved in the design and installation of complex security systems.

The sector employs around 500,000 people and is estimated to contribute some £6 Billion to the economy of the UK. It works closely with the police service and provides many of the non-core functions that were undertaken by the police, but for which police powers were considered to be unnecessary.

The key services the industry provides are:

  • The provision of uniformed services including manned and retail guarding and transport security
  • The transportation of cash and valuables
  • Events security and stewarding
  • Door supervision
  • Security dog handlers
  • CCTV operations
  • Close protection
  • Private Investigators
  • Bailiffs
  • Locksmiths
  • Security systems installers (intruder alarms, CCTV and access control systems)
  • Security consultants


Companies range in size from sole trades, to international organisations who employ hundreds of thousands of people worldwide.
