The manufacturing sector describes any organisation that makes products on a large scale, usually using machinery.

From pharmaceuticals to vehicles, manufacturing generates £137 billion a year to the UK economy and represents 10% of gross value added (GVA). In June 2010, manufacturing in the United Kingdom accounted for 8.2% of the workforce and 12% of the country's national output.

Key sectors include:

  • engineering: marine, transport, aerospace and automotive
  • electrical and electronics
  • food, drink and tobacco
  • paper, printing and publishing
  • textiles
