What Are Functional Skills?

Functional Skills qualifications are designed to give learners the skills to operate confidently, effectively and independently in education, work and everyday life.

They have been created in response to employers' recommendations that learners would benefit from a thorough grounding in the basics and the ability to problem-solve.

The qualifications are available in English, mathematics and ICT at entry level 1, 2, 3 and level 1 and 2 and assess the Functional Skills standards, coverage and range. All of our level 1 and 2 Functional Skills can be delivered via either on-screen or paper-based assessment, providing flexibility to both learners and centres.

Each qualification can be delivered by itself or alternatively as part of an apprenticeship, where they are mandatory components for those learners without a GCSE in Maths and English at grades A* - C.
